Beyond the founders what kind of vesting acceleration clauses should a startup expect for other key members of the management team?

It’s worth noting that most pre-funding startups will change their idea and their business model many times before things really get rolling. What I find more interesting, as in your case, is major direction change later in the stage of the (still young) company. I would guess the change from podcast recommendation to recommendation engine was not the first major change you’d made, but considering the timing it was probably the riskiest you’ve made so far.

kris kris,
You’re comments got me to thinking…maybe we’re re being too general when speaking of “building a successful community”...aren’t there in fact different kinds of communities, some that require a certain fashionability (myspace) and others that require a critical content value (found|read)...I’m sure there are other ways to slice the communities and each might impact the requirements and expectations on how that community is built…this may not be a one size fits all situation…

This was noted in the opening, but it is worth repeating that even when recruiting is tough it is still one of the single most important factors in the success of the startup…this is true in any market at any time…in my experience, when in doubt dedicate more (not less) time to recruiting key talent…and in the early stages be incredibly selective…as the saying goes, “one bad apple…”
