Kipling, these are valid points, and I agree that an employer has every right to take necessary action when they feel that an employee is wasting time or not performing to the expected standard.

Where I have an issue is when the employer takes it a step further by saying, “not only are we going to let you go without formal warning, but we are also going to try to take the company you are creating.”

Like you said, as an moonlighting entrepreneur it is important to identify for yourself when its time to go and make the move before something much worse can happen.

great article. Not sure if this is right but I’ve heard Shilling does a lot of homework about hitters behaviors and tendencies.

To me that is a corollary to market research, consumer behavior, partnerships and such for a startup.

Yes, get to market, don’t wait around on perfection, but know the market so you don’t get knocked out in the 2nd inning.

Kind of took my breath away.

While act of leaving a +100k job to risk making millions does not have the same heroic undertone anymore, your leadership quality takeaways are potent.

I think your quite right, founders often quote the dismal startup failure rates when giving advice, recruiting early employees, and talking about past ventures , but its not part of the planning vernacular, there is very little talk of “go-or-no-go” until its quite obvious that you’ve reached “no-go”.

Forming a Hypothesis then validating it occurs naturally with any startup and should be embraced as a process/methodology early in the game.

Great topic and insight.

We actually just completed a renaming process, going from: PromoterForce to Rephoria. Rephoria is a web application, used by consumers to refer friends to trusted services and by service providers to create and manage referral marketing programs.

Some initial feedback said that PromoterForce was to techie, and bizznessy , so we went with something softer and more consumer orientated. Playing off the word euphoria, Rephoria is defined as, an intense state of customer satisfaction, so good it has to be shared with others.

Let me know what you think and thanks for the tips.

These questions are good awareness factors for CEO’s, but I do not understand all the secrecy. No offense but PE investors are not the wise sages of all things business and investing.

They should take a hint from the VC bloggers and open those gold threaded kimonos a bit more. Shrouds of secrecy means there is something to hide.
