This site sounds like it will become a great, though I don’t get what the ‘found: ’ and the ‘read: ’ tags are all about.

David, this can be interesting. But some thoughts: Not really knowing if I am part of the in-crowd but isn’t getting “in” the first test of your networking skills? And, is there really a single underground, or isn’t there likely multiple undergrounds with each having different biases?

Hmm… It will also be nice if we can edit comments (such as with typos).

Nice idea – but it seems that pulling off this bottom-up approach is hard as at the very least it seems to need a large contributing community.

I would like to hear of examples, especially cases where ventures with limited budgets were able to market successfully with chaos.

Here’s some resources that I like on this topic:

Two more good resources on the topic (perhaps it is worth including a list at the end):

The care and feeding of social media’s three classes: Creators, Curators, Consumers -
http://lsvp.wordpress.com/2007/04/15/the-care-and-feeding…

Game mechanics applied to social media: Keeping score -
http://lsvp.wordpress.com/2007/04/06/game-mechanics-appli…

Ilya,
A good start – in particular I like the note that you need some initial content. Some thoughts after reading your post:

- Instead of ‘tight control’ or ‘carefully managing’ I would agree for the creators to have a tight initial focus since you really can’t control your audience.

- Also the general rules of any new venture: it is a good idea to build something that you will use, and it is important to be agile – to pay attention to which features users want or don’t want.

- It is more about ‘building a community’ as opposed to ‘creating a community’, i.e. this stuff takes time.

Yup, three perspectives for pricing (that I know of):
(a) Value provided to customer,
(b) Cost of building the product, and
(c) Competitor costs (and market positioning).

It might be worth including/referencing some ideas from: http://softwarepricing.com/

Matthew, Great story, though (if possible) it will be nice to hear more details about the cause of the hangover – is it a disagreement between your partner and you, or that your growth rate did not meet expectations? ...?

In particular, what are the most important lessons that other Entrepreneur’s can take from your experience?

I think there seem to be important points/issues here:

Projects taking longer even happen with inhouse teams, except that communication barriers are lower and therefore the errors in approximation are lower. The problem seems to be in dealing with shady offshoring providers and anyone have tips here?

The other issue is regarding outsourcing/offshoring your business core. If this is a core task, then you will likely want to hire developers per month instead of per project to keep with the day-to-day maintenance and updates of the code. Anyone have experience/suggestions here?
