Must read Tara Hunt’s pinko marketing on building user communities. am quite a fan

she is quite a user champion

http://pinkomarketing.pbwiki.com/

What we need next is a Do’s and dont’s style or 10 simple steps style write up for how to build a community.

At Thumbspeed (www.thumbspeed.com) in its early days we built fun applications for mobile like crossword, sudoku, movie listings etc.

Soon we realized that market for that was at best limited and focussed on our core offering of Mobile IM. We quit the mobile gaming business and it reaped rich dividends.

500 X of revenues!!! can someone cite some other examples where valuation was done at similar levels??

I would love to know whats really the reason behind such high valuation!

Coming to the question about tortoise or hare that Carleen made..well i guess I would rather be the hare…and thats cause i dont think i have the skill set to run a company with 3000 employees and 40 offices. I work best with small teams.

Its more of a personality trait that decides my choice.

every one here should read a post on the same site including Adam and Carleen
http://www.foundread.com/view/vet-reward

On the subject of cheap tricks well i often hear people say ” any publicity is good publicity”. same sentiment was shared by Nathan above. Well there is negative publicity and there is ‘naughty’ publicity. I think naughty publicity works. Negative publicity doesnt.

As a case in example we did this cheeky email campaign a few days ago where we mailed our friends with a subject line ” we are hiring your boss”. People were asked to mail us the names of their boss and email id. IF we hired them we would give the referral money to him. Read about the email here http://www.mangospring.com/blogs/work/

The idea of getting paid to get your boss off your back did get us quite a few amused looks and well i would say worked well. It was naughty not negative.

What happened here with TrialIPO was negative.

I can never find a name that is available as a domain name (.com)

Its such a pain coming up with a name that isnt taken!! Its almost a never ending cycle of trying to find a good name.

Some people really do a good job of being creative with names. Like i guess twitter or meebo. If someone has a post on how to come up with names that are not taken please enlighten me…am frustrated with this whole naming business :-(

jeez must say he was a brave man to start a company in China…its the fear of unknown that stops us from venturing there…

what i am wondering is with no visitors no data on the kind of visitors and the stickiness of the site who would be ready to pay money for ads on the site.

I guess you can make a better case of selling your inventory when you have had some usage statistics.

So my recommendation hold your horses till a few months into launch.

As far as business plan goes …do projected visitors and projected page views. USe this data to build a business case rather than ads and ad rates.

often what happens is that you start with a name like it….build ure product and by the time it is launch you are convinced its a bad name…

and then u start all over again!! its frustrating to say the least …

difficult to be in love with the name 6 months after you came up with it :-)
