Where Do I Find Someone To Code My Great Idea ?

By Jimmy Gardner (6 points), May 15, 2007 —  6 Comments

I have had an idea for a cool startup and have been diligently working the design concepts and business plans. My problem is this: while smart and technical, I am not a coder. I want to find freelancers to code my idea and am willing to pay good $$. I know there is Elance, but are there any other options for me ? Are there any places that will hook people like me up with a set of go getting college students out to make a few dollars ?

another option is ODesk, similar to Elance and possibly a few more providers to choose from.

Have you seen cambrianhouse? www.cambrianhouse.com

Also, programmer meet designer? (it works in both directions) http://programmermeetdesigner.com/

Getafreelancer.com and rentacoder.com have worked for me, although you’re more likely to find Indian and Eastern European coders than Americans there.

Get a co-founder. It’s cheaper, you’ll get better quality work, and it’ll improve you as a founder.

You need a personal friend that you can trust, a family member. This person needs to have a good understanding of code, and You need to be able to Trust them. Without this person, you are likely to over pay, out-source to much of a puzzle to one person. I like odesk and craigslist.

Tony Wright nailed it… Your project will probably require indefinate, ongoing software development – and no one will pour more tender love and care into this code than a stakeholder viewing it as their baby.

But regardless:

Whoever you end up using here – be it a co-founder / a friend / uni student / freelance developer / your grandmother… make sure before the coder does ANYTHING you get them to sign an agreement that the code produced is your IP and leave this with your lawyer for safe-keeping. Otherwise the code the write belongs to them, not you.

Even a simple written agreement will almost certainly save you a lot of trouble down the road.
