I was recently “let go” from my job of three years for violating my employee agreement by working on a side business and not properly disclosing it to my employer. Besides being tossed out, I’m now in the midst of resolving a claim by my employer that because I did some work (writing on my blog) while at work, the company I’m creating is their property.
A few additional details, my startup does not encroach on my former employers core or future business plan or use any of their IP.
The business idea was created on my own time, using my own equipment. I did however make the mistake of not properly assessing the impact of posting to my company blog during the workday.
While the matter is unresolved and we are confident in our position, this is a major headache and threat, and other entrepreneurs would really benefit from knowing the in’s and outs of this issue so they can avoid it.
