Hopefully somebody will have experience in this sort of thing and be able to offer some guidance.
I’ve been running small websites for years now. I make a living doing it. The problem is the growth of these websites is severely limited by my man-hours. The end-result is I end up doing an average job on everyone of them, and I don’t get to develop the new ideas I have.
So, I want to rent a small office and put a programmer and a designer to work full-time. The labour here in Brazil is very cheap so it’s totally cost effective.
My issue is with management. What happens if I’m unable to make it to the office one day? Since I have no associate, if I’m not there, the employees aren’t working as they have no way to enter the office. I think that productivity would be much greater working in an office, but as a single founder overseeing two or more employees, should I opt for remote project management?
Help is appreciated!

If you hire well, and hire someone you trust with your code, you should also be able to trust them with a key to the office. YOu may find yoru productivity goes up going into teh office every day also.
If not, you could also consider contractors, and working remotely.
But have you overseen anyone before? Your note suggests lack of trust in your potential employees. It’s best to hire slowly, hire well, then really truly trust them. Otherwise any time you gain in work will be lost in not sleeping at night.

The trust is crucial and you have to find people who can actually be more dedicated and involved in the process.
It is basically chemistry thing, and you need to spend a lot of time with the prospective hires. One way to incentivize the employees is by giving them options, which gives them an ownership in the overall health of the company.

Look around your social network, do you see anyone who fits the requirements technically? Build some trust with such individuals,a trust that that they can come and go into the office even without you. Giving them some sense of ownership in the whole project (to the right person) will certainly be helpful in getting the most out of such individuals.
