I would love to collaborate on or see written by someone else a story about creating a community around a product or startup. That is, how to create discussion and activity around the product, and also how to bring in the core of active users that bring any community-focused site to life.

Those are great posts, and there are many gems in the comments. Too bad Kathy Sierra isn’t blogging anymore :(

Ilya,
A good start – in particular I like the note that you need some initial content. Some thoughts after reading your post:
- Instead of ‘tight control’ or ‘carefully managing’ I would agree for the creators to have a tight initial focus since you really can’t control your audience.
- Also the general rules of any new venture: it is a good idea to build something that you will use, and it is important to be agile – to pay attention to which features users want or don’t want.
- It is more about ‘building a community’ as opposed to ‘creating a community’, i.e. this stuff takes time.

What we need next is a Do’s and dont’s style or 10 simple steps style write up for how to build a community.
